Nestled in Victoria’s picturesque High Country, the Benambra Hotel is more than just a pub – it’s a living testament to the town’s resilience and history.
Originally established in the late 19th century, this iconic venue has welcomed generations of locals and visitors, forging its place as the heart of the Benambra community.
The Benambra Hotel’s roots stretch back to the 1870s when Mary Murphy, affectionately known as “Old Ma Murphy,” operated a sly grog shop to serve miners and pioneers in the Omeo Plains.
Her modest canvas tent evolved into Camden House, a timber structure that still forms the hotel’s accommodation section today.
Officially licensed in 1886, the hotel flourished, becoming a central hub for the growing community. It has withstood floods, fires and drought, thanks to the dedication of its owners and the strength of the community it serves.
The Tomkins family joined this legacy in 1994 when they purchased the pub, fostering its reputation as a welcoming haven in the High Country.
More recently, Erin Tomkins, a Benambra local with deep ties to the region, took over the hotel and has infused it with fresh energy while honouring its historic charm.
Under her stewardship, the pub has embraced new opportunities, catering to both locals and the growing number of visitors discovering the region’s beauty.
Erin has seen a noticeable increase in motorbike riders traversing the High Country, including road enthusiasts and adventure riders tackling routes like the Hunt 1000 as well as the Great Alps Walking Track.
With the nearby Omeo Mountain Bike Park gaining popularity, she anticipates a surge in mountain bike riders looking for affordable and friendly country hospitality.
“Motorbike riders and mountain bikers are the perfect fit for what we offer here – hearty meals, cold drinks, and a laid-back atmosphere,” Erin said.
“It’s exciting to see so many travellers discovering Benambra and we’re proud to be their stopover.”
Recent Google reviews reflect the growing popularity of the Benambra Hotel.
Guests have praised the pub’s welcoming atmosphere, delicious meals and cozy, budget-friendly accommodation.
One recent review reads: “A hidden gem in the High Country! The food was incredible, and the staff made us feel like family. We’ll definitely be back!”
Another guest raved: “Perfect stop after a long ride – great beer, great company and so much history in this place.”
Erin is committed to preserving the Benambra Hotel’s legacy while adapting it for future generations. Upcoming plans include enhanced facilities for cyclists and motorbike riders, family-friendly events, and new collaborations, such as a partnership with High Country Hooch to create a smokey-flavored spirit inspired by the community’s resilience through bushfires.
“The Benambra Hotel has always been a place where everyone feels at home, and that’s something we’ll continue to honour,” Erin said.
“Whether you’re a local, a motorbike rider, or a mountain biker exploring the trails, this pub will always have a cold drink and a warm welcome waiting for you.”
With its rich history, thriving reputation, and exciting future, the Benambra Hotel is poised to remain a beloved fixture of the High Country for years to come.
