Lucknow is the 2024/25 Bairnsdale Cricket Association under 16 premier, winning a competitive contest on Monday at Hudson-Alvin Oval against St Mary’s Nagle/Wy Yung.
St Mary’s Nagle/Wy Yung won the toss and posted a score of 5/100 from its 30-over allocation, and it looked a nice score but early wickets were going to be the key if it was going to be enough to hold up the cup.
Noah Mathers (19) and Harry Forbes (30 retired) impressed at the top of the order for the combine, and they got valuable runs from Luis Wilson (14 retired) and Venkat Narayanan (10 retired).
Archer Poore (2/19) and Oakley Hughes (2/15) both bowled good spells for Lucknow under pressure.
In reply, the Magpies chased down the runs inside 26 overs for the loss of just one wicket.
Mitchell Johnson (30 retired) and Poore (31 retired) were standouts with the bat for the winners, while Ayrton Corben (19) and Hughes (10 not out) also impressed in the run chase.
Hughes was awarded the player of the match, completing a huge weekend for the promising all rounder.
Hughes, Fletcher Watt and Jude Wilson were all part of the Lucknow Magpies under 13 side that was victorious in the grand final on Friday night, the trio picking up two medallions in just four days.
As part of the presentations, seasonal association awards were presented with Johnson, who has impressed at “A” grade level this season, taking the batting, and Poore, who debuted in the top grade towards the end of the campaign, the winner of the bowling.
