Last Friday saw the playing of the Marion Dwyer Salver at the Bairnsdale Golf Club.
It was an opportunity to recall the wonderful golfing feats of extraordinary champion golfer, Marion Dwyer.
Her many achievements include, nine times Victorian Country Champion, 13 Gippsland Championships, three Metropolitan Club Championships, 16 East Gippsland Championships, 31 times Bairnsdale Golf Club Champion and Victorian Veterans Champion.
Dwyer was a life member at Bairnsdale, Orbost and Newry Golf Clubs, as well as the East Gippsland Women’s Golf where she served as president
and captain a number of times.
At Bairnsdale, Marion had been president, ladies’ captain and a member of the associates committee for 23 years.
She also represented East and West Gippsland on the Victorian Ladies’ Golf Union Council (VLGUC)
Dwyer was dedicated to developing country golf and country golf courses when she was on the VLGUC, and was vitally interested in supporting new golfers and would travel to small clubs giving clinics.
Her name is also perpetuated with the annual Women’s Golf Vicoria, Victorian Country
Foursomes Championship.
This year’s event was won by Karen Dimarco and Susan Kuch, on countback from Jodie O’Connell and Claudia Watson.
In third place was Lyn Beeck and Sue Gannon, all finished with a score of plus seven.
