For Paynesville residents Colin and Di Wells, volunteering has been a part of life for the past 25 years.
Together they’ve been delivering Meals on Wheels in their hometown, staying connected and giving back to the community they love.
The Wells are also active members of the Paynesville Bowls Club, where around 10 members regularly assist with meal deliveries.
“It’s just what we do. It’s a way to help out and stay part of the community,”
Colin said.
Last week, that connection to community was celebrated through Gippsland Lakes Complete Health’s (GLCH) National Volunteer Week events.
GLCH held thank you lunches in Bairnsdale and Lakes Entrance to recognise the volunteers who make a difference in the lives of
East Gippsland residents every day.
While the Paynesville Bowling Club plays a key role in the Meals on Wheels program, so too does the Bower Birds healthcare fundraising committee in Bairnsdale.
Many of its members, including Heather Rose
and Marg Porter, also
deliver meals.
“I enjoy it, delivering the meals to the older ladies. They always say thank-you and are up for a chat,”
Marg said.
“We just wanted to volunteer and help out.”
GLCH volunteers support a wide range of services, including social support programs, community gardens, childcare and more.
Volunteer Di McKinnon regularly helps cook meals and connect with participants in The Lounge
Crew and Positive Parkies – two long-running GLCH social groups.
“There’s a thrill that comes with helping those who need it. I love it,” Di said.
Chief executive officer Anne-Maree Kaser told the Bairnsdale gathering volunteers are the heart and soul of GLCH.
“You’re a vital part of our workforce. The economic value you bring is significant, but what you offer goes far beyond that,” she said.
“The connection, the compassion, and the care you provide is something no number can capture.”
GLCH welcomes new volunteers year-round and offers roles to suit a range of interests and time commitments.
