Wy Yung collected an important round eight East Gippsland Football Netball League win over fellow top two aspirant, Stratford, defeating the Swans somewhat convincingly by 25 points at Tigerland last Saturday.
Two points separated the sides at half time before the Tigers opened up numerous scoring opportunities in the second half, the Brodie Anderson-coached side finishing with 22 scoring shots to 12 in what could’ve been an even bigger victory as it eyes off closing the gap to the undefeated Lucknow.
Wy Yung kicked four goals to one in a dominant third quarter before keeping the Swans at bay with a 3.3 to 2.1 final term.
The Tigers kicked those four goals in a 10 minute period when Daniel was in the ruck and the Wy Yung midfield worked themselves on top after being slightly shaded in the first half.
The Tigers’ runners created plenty of headaches for Stratford with Tom Betts, Mitch Toms, gun recruit Jett Murphy and co-captain Jock Overend starring.
The high impact Nathan Dennison again stepped up against a strong opponent while Daniel was the best big man on the ground.
Co-captain Harry Kellow kicked three goals while Norm Betts and Luke Elia finished with two each.
The reliable Nathan French and Alex Morcom again featured in Stratford’s best alongside the enigmatic Jack Bacon, Morcom kicking three goals and Ethan Albrecht two, but the Swans couldn’t match the Tigers when the heat rose during the premiership quarter.
The Swans played most of the final quarter without reigning league best and fairest Lachlan Channing, who was yellow carded for a late bump, however not reported by the umpires. There was no sign of Haydn Erfurth for Stratford, after playing in their last match against Lucknow.
Brody Reid and Angus Mason were also solid for the Swans.
The Tigers sit second on the table, four points ahead of Stratford in third.
They will trek east to take on the Orbost Snowy Rovers who will be smarting after going down to Lakes Entrance last Saturday.
Stratford will make the short trek to Lindenow, keen to get their season back on track after consecutive losses after being unbeaten through the first six rounds.
Lindenow had a morale and confidence-boasting victory last week against Paynesville, which will have the Cats up and about, but whether they have the moves to claim a big scalp like the Swans, only time will tell.
