Three new exhibitions are set to open at East Gippsland Art Gallery at 5.30pm on Friday, May 1, bringing together diverse artistic approaches that explore our connection to the natural world, memory and moments of quiet discovery.
Featuring works by Hilary Peterson, Elisabeth Scott and Velta Fellows, the exhibitions invite audiences to slow down, look closely, and engage with environments both seen and felt.
All are welcome to attend the free opening event, with exhibitions continuing through to June 6, 2026.
HILARY PETERSON – BODIES OF WATER AND LIMINAL SPACES
“The natural world is not merely a backdrop to our lives. It is a living, breathing participant in the human story… each piece is an invitation to slow down, observe, and listen.” — Hilary Peterson, 2026.
Drawing on her coastal surroundings, Hilary Peterson’s Bodies of Water and Liminal Spaces explores the shifting edges where land, water and vegetation meet.
Working across drawing, printmaking, painting, natural dyeing and textile processes, Peterson captures the subtle rhythms and textures of the environment – those fleeting moments of movement, colour and pattern that sit beyond literal representation.
ELISABETH SCOTT – LET ME KEEP
“I create my images… to capture how I feel in this time so that I can revisit it.” — Elisabeth Scott.
Inspired by Mary Oliver’s poem Mysteries, Yes, Elisabeth Scott’s Let Me Keep reflects on our relationship with the natural world and the quiet wonder it invites.
Working across drawing and printmaking, Scott’s works act as personal records of sensation and memory, capturing fleeting emotional states through mark-making.
VELTA FELLOWS – WHERE IS FOSTER?
Velta Fellows’ work begins with a flower seed, which grows into digital landscapes of flowers.
Through photography and art, she transforms the ordinary into something extraordinary, with her cat Foster often hidden within these scenes.
The series Where Is Foster invites viewers to pause, look closely and enjoy the surprise of finding him.
