Mercurial Bairnsdale forward, Brayden McCarrey, had a day out at the Bairnsdale City Oval last Saturday.
The long-sleeved dynamo amassed 18 disposals, helping himself to eight goals in the Redlegs’ 61-point demolition of Gippsland League rival, Sale.
It was highest haul in a Gippsland League senior match for McCarrey who leads the competition goalkicking with 33 goals from eight matches. It was just two shy of the club record of 10 kicked by David Preston back in the 1990s.
McCarrey kicked three goals in the opening nine minutes of the game, quickly disposing of first opponent, Jake Hutchins.
Gippsland Power-listed Sale teenager Harry Tatterson ran with McCarrey until three quarter time, conceding another five majors before Ben Hall was assigned the run-with role in the final term.
McCarrey described the win as one of the best he has been associated with in his time in the Redlegs senior side.
“The third quarter was ridiculous, the ball just kept coming in and we just kept kicking goals out the back. We were playing dry weather footy on a wet day,” McCarrey said.
Having missed a few games last year and round one this year through injury, McCarrey is happy to be able to be able to string a few games together as the Redlegs hopefully build towards something special.
“It’s great to be out there consistently getting on the end of a few. Hopefully we can continue the momentum against Traralgon this week,” McCarrey said.
Modest about his performance, McCarrey was keen to praise the effort of the whole team.
“We had no passengers at all today, the whole team is playing with great determination and spirit,” McCarrey said.
